Stop the Cruel Treatment of Injured Livestock
Legislation
introduced in Oregon would make it a crime to trade in cows too injured to walk.
There is no humane way to move such animals, known as "downed animals,"
so they are cruelly dragged with chains or forced forward with electric prods
to get them from auction to slaughter. By prohibiting profiting from nonambulatory
livestock, farmers will have to ensure that their animals don't become lame in
the first place.
This bill has already passed the Oregon House
of Representatives, and now needs to pass the Senate. If you live in Oregon,
contact your state Senator immediately and ask her or him to "Please support
House Bill 2339, the downed animals bill." You can look up your Oregon
state Senator is and how to contact her or him at Congress.org
or ask us at [email protected].
