Ban on Dog
and Cat Slaughter Enacted in NY
On September 24, New York enacted a
new law banning the slaughter of dogs and cats for
their meat or fur. While such slaughter is rare in
the U.S., mostly for specialty Korean dishes, it remains
legal almost everywhere. (The slaughter of dogs and
cats for fur is already banned by the federal government.)
The legislation, originally sponsored by Assemblyman
Glick and Senator Maltese, came in response to a TV
investigation of a New York farm selling dogs carcasses
for meat.
