Stop the
Slaughter of Horses
UPDATE: Thanks to your
help, on May 18 the U.S. House of Representatives
unanimously approved an amendment -- the Rahall-Whitfield-Sweeney-Spratt
amendment -- to stop the commercial sale and slaughter
of wild horses and burros. It must now pass the Senate
as well. Please contact
your two U.S. Senators and ask them "Please
co-sponsor S. 1915, the Ensign-Landrieu bill to stop
horse slaughter."
The fight to protect wild horses is
a key component of the larger goal of ending all horse
slaughter for human consumption. There are nearly
100,000 horses sent to three foreign-owned slaughterhouses
operating in the United States. The horses are shipped
in cattle trucks and sent to slaughterhouses, where
these majestic animals are dismembered and then exported
in order to please the palates of consumers in Belgium,
France, and Japan.
